Off to the Rockies: Adventure Begins!
With luggage piled impossibly high, were they smuggling rocks home? Our bus, guided expertly by Ian, our veteran driver, rolled out of Calgary, threading through sunshine and showers. Ian regaled us with colourful tales of Wild Bill Peyto and amusing anecdotes about exploding historic churches, while our Australian friends amused us right back with humorous insights into their tipping culture and Aussie footie team rivalries.
As the breathtaking peaks of the Canadian Rockies loomed large ahead, every traveller was captivated. Cameras snapped and breaths held, this was the moment they’d travelled across the globe for!
Banff Gondola: Snow, Sun, and Curious Bighorn Sheep
Our first stop at the Banff Gondola perfectly showcased spring in the Rockies, a charming mix of sunshine and snowflakes swirling gently around us. Amidst gasps and laughter, curious bighorn sheep wandered up close, almost asking, “What’s an Aussie doing here?” Amid the awe, questions inevitably turned to bears:
- “Will we see bears?”
- “What happens if a bear approaches us?”
- “How often do Canadians encounter bears?”
My playful reply always drew laughs, “And how exactly do you live among Huntsman Spiders?!
A Fairmont Banff Springs Evening
Our next stop, the legendary Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, left everyone awestruck. Known as Canada’s “Castle in the Rockies,” this iconic hotel instantly became a favourite. That night, with the warmth of new friendships, we bonded over laughter, Canadian beverages, and the hilarity of trying to grasp Australian Rules Footie, a cultural education, indeed!
Scenic Drives, Moose Surprises, and Iconic Lakes
The following morning began early, packed full of iconic sites. From the serene Two Jack Lake and Lake Minnewanka to an unbeatable view from Surprise Corner, the landscapes consistently delivered ‘wow’ moments. Lunch in Banff was a cultural exchange of Canadian delicacies, Caesars and poutine, and hearty laughs.
Determined to spot bears, we journeyed along the stunning Bow Valley Parkway. Every rustle prompted excitement, every viewpoint inspired awe. A quick hike at Lower Johnston Canyon Falls provided perfect photo opportunities. Bears, however, remained elusive. But nature had a special surprise.
Just when I felt disappointed for our bear-seekers, an enthusiastic cry rang out, “MOOSE!” Two majestic moose stood roadside, rare even for seasoned Canadians. My excitement was palpable, though I humorously discovered that our Aussie guests had their hearts still set on bears.
Thankfully, for all of the travelers eagerly hoping to spot bears, I was able to send them up to Whistler on one of our fantastic day tours later on, and they saw BEARS! Lots and lots of bears! Success!
Fond Farewells and Lifelong Connections
Our journey culminated at the breathtaking Fairmont Château Lake Louise. Saying goodbye to this incredible group wasn’t easy. Friendships forged over mountains, wildlife, and cultural curiosities had transformed into lifelong bonds.
